Home to S.L. Benfica, Estádio da Luz opened its doors in 2003 as a replacement for the club's previous ground. The new stadium welcomed fans for the first time with an exhibition match against Uruguayan side Nacional. Designed as a multi-purpose venue, it primarily hosts Portuguese football, though its capacity of 64,642 makes it Portugal's largest stadium and one of Europe's biggest by size. The ground has hosted some of European football's most significant events. It staged matches during UEFA Euro 2004, including the tournament final, and later became the venue for the Champions League finals in both 2014 and 2020. UEFA recognised its standing by awarding it category four status. The stadium earned further recognition when an online poll named it Europe's most beautiful ground, and by its fifteenth anniversary it had welcomed over 17 million spectators through its gates.
