It staged matches during UEFA Euro 2004, including the tournament final, and later became the venue for the Champions League finals in both 2014 and 2020. UEFA recognised its standing by awarding it category four status. The stadium earned further recognition when an online poll named it Europe's most beautiful ground, and by its fifteenth anniversary it had welcomed over 17 million spectators through its gates.
