Home to FC Schalke 04 since 2001, the Veltins-Arena stands in Gelsenkirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia, with a capacity of 62,271 for league matches and 54,740 for international fixtures. The stadium's defining feature is its retractable roof and moveable pitch, both innovations that set it apart when it opened. The pitch can slide out entirely, enabling optimal grass maintenance and flexibility to host events beyond football. The arena's engineering is striking: a Teflon-coated fiberglass canvas roof spans the entire venue, supported by a rectangular steel truss and 24 pylons. The site presented challenges—two mine shafts beneath required the stadium's main axis to be rotated—but the structure was built on cast concrete and compacted slag from steel smelting. Inside, you'll find a centrally suspended scoreboard, the first of its kind in a football stadium, alongside extensive catering: 15 restaurants, 50 grilling stations, and 35 cafés. The Veltins-Arena has hosted the 2004 UEFA Champions League final, five matches at the 2006 FIFA World Cup including a quarter-final, and four matches at UEFA Euro 2024. Beyond football, it's staged the 2010 Ice Hockey World Championship, the German Speedway Grand Prix, and concerts from major international artists.
