Naples' principal football stadium was completed in 1959 and remains one of Italy's largest venues. Today it seats 54,726, though before conversion to all-seater configuration it held considerably more, with many spectators standing. The ground is home to SSC Napoli. The stadium was renamed in honour of Diego Maradona following his death in 2020. The proposal came from the city's mayor and the club's president, and was formally approved on 4 December that year. Previously known as Stadio San Paolo, it now bears Maradona's full name—a fitting tribute to one of football's greatest players and the man most associated with the club's golden era.
