Marseille's Stade Vélodrome has hosted major football and rugby events since opening in 1937, when Marseille played Torino in the stadium's first match. Home to Olympique de Marseille, it stands as France's largest club football ground with a capacity of 67,394. The venue has welcomed the FIFA World Cups in 1938 and 1998, UEFA European Championships in 1960, 1984 and 2016, and the 2007 Rugby World Cup. Beyond club football, the stadium has become a spiritual home for French rugby. The national team enjoyed a notable winning streak here in the early 2000s, defeating New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and England in successive fixtures, before losing to Argentina in 2004. More recently, the venue staged its first Six Nations match in 2018. Top 14 side RC Toulon regularly brings matches to the Vélodrome, drawing substantial crowds for fixtures against rivals. The stadium has also hosted semi-finals in the Top 14 season and European cup competitions, cementing its role as a premier venue beyond Marseille's football faithful.
