France's national stadium sits just north of Paris in Saint-Denis, commanding an 80,698-seat capacity that makes it the largest in the country. Its distinctive architecture draws inspiration from Pan American's Worldport terminal at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. The venue serves as the primary home for France's national football and rugby union teams, hosting their international fixtures. Built ahead of the 1998 FIFA World Cup, Stade de France has become one of Europe's premier sporting venues. It hosted the World Cup final that year, when France defeated Brazil 3–0, and has since welcomed the UEFA Champions League final multiple times, the Rugby World Cup on three occasions, and seven matches at UEFA Euro 2016, including the final. The stadium also held athletics events at the 2003 World Championships and hosted the annual Meeting Areva athletics competition from 1999 to 2016. More recently, it played a key role in Paris's successful bid for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, hosting athletics, rugby sevens, and the closing ceremonies for both the Olympics and Paralympics.
