Nestled between Peconic Bay and the Atlantic Ocean on Long Island, Shinnecock Hills Golf Club stands as one of America's oldest golf institutions. Established in 1891, it was instrumental in founding the United States Golf Association just three years later, counting itself among the five charter clubs. The club also distinguished itself by constructing what is widely recognised as the first golf clubhouse in the country, a McKim, Mead & White design that opened in 1892. From the start, Shinnecock Hills welcomed women members—a progressive stance rare amongst American golf clubs at the time. The William Flynn–designed course, completed in 1931, has become legendary in competitive golf. The club has regularly hosted major championships, including five U.S. Opens, with the most recent victory by Brooks Koepka in 2018. Future tournaments are scheduled for 2026 and 2036. Recognised nationally for its historic significance, Shinnecock Hills earned its place on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000 and continues to rank amongst the world's greatest courses.
