Every July, rowers from around the world converge on Henley-on-Thames for a six-day competition that has defined competitive rowing since 1839. Held on the River Thames, the regatta showcases head-to-head knock-out races over a 1 mile 550 yards course, with the Grand Challenge Cup for men's Eights standing as its most prestigious prize since the very first staging. The event operates independently, governed by a self-perpetuating body of Stewards—mostly former rowers themselves—though it's recognised by both British Rowing and World Rowing. Because the regatta pre-dates any national rowing organisation, it maintains its own rules and traditions. It sits firmly within the English social season, and like other events of its kind, certain enclosures enforce strict dress codes. Three separate regattas also use approximately the same course throughout the year: Henley Women's Regatta, Henley Masters Regatta, and Henley Town and Visitors' Regatta, each entirely distinct from the Royal Regatta itself.
