Manchester City's home ground was built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games and later transformed into a football stadium, opening to the club in summer 2003 after they relocated from Maine Road. The venue holds 53,400 supporters, making it the fifth-largest capacity in the Premier League and tenth-largest across the United Kingdom. Its distinctive cable-stayed roof, suspended by twelve exterior masts, has earned recognition from the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Institution of Structural Engineers for its innovative design. Beyond domestic football, the stadium has hosted major events including the 2008 UEFA Cup Final, England internationals, rugby league and union matches, and a boxing world title fight. The ground also welcomes summer music concerts during the off-season. A significant expansion added a 7,000-seat third tier to the South Stand in time for the 2015–16 season, complementing the existing architectural style.
