Home to Club América and the Mexico national team, Estadio Banorte sits high above Mexico City at 2,200 metres elevation. Its capacity of 87,523 makes it Latin America's largest stadium and ranks eighth globally among football grounds. The venue's iconic status rests on hosting two FIFA World Cup finals—Brazil's 4–1 victory over Italy in 1970, and Argentina's 3–2 win against West Germany in 1986. That 1986 tournament also saw Diego Maradona's famous goals against England in the quarter-final played here. The stadium holds unique distinction as the only ground where both Pelé and Maradona claimed World Cup glory. Beyond these landmarks, it hosted Italy's 4–3 extra-time victory over West Germany during the 1970 semi-finals, the 1968 Summer Olympics football tournament, and the 1971 Women's World Cup. Looking ahead, the venue will become the first stadium to host three FIFA World Cup tournaments when it stages matches during 2026, including the opening game between South Africa and Mexico. The stadium also features regularly in the NFL's International Series schedule.
