The Albert Park Circuit wraps around Albert Park Lake, just three kilometres south of Melbourne's city centre. While the track runs along public roads normally open to traffic, it transforms annually into a motorsport venue with the infrastructure of a permanent racing facility. Grass and gravel run-off zones are reconstructed each year to manage the medium to high-speed demands of the course. The circuit hosts the Australian Grand Prix—traditionally the Formula One season's opening race—alongside the Supercars Championship Melbourne 400 and other support events. It holds an FIA Grade 1 licence. Where the track curves along Lakeside Drive, the lake's proximity limits natural run-off space, so concrete barriers are erected annually to contain the circuit in these sections and maintain safety standards throughout the year's racing calendar.
