Your First Time at Wimbledon: Everything You Need to Know
Wimbledon is the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. The Championships, held at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in south-west London, combine world-class sport with quintessentially British traditions — from the all-white dress code to the strawberries and cream.
If you're attending for the first time, here's what to expect.
Understanding Wimbledon Tickets
Wimbledon tickets fall into several categories:
Centre Court — the main show court. All the biggest matches in the second week are played here, including the finals. Tickets are the most sought-after and expensive.
No. 1 Court — the second show court with a retractable roof. Excellent matches throughout the tournament, often featuring top-10 players.
Grounds Pass — gives you access to all outside courts (Courts 2-18) plus the Henman Hill big screen. First-week grounds passes are fantastic value — you can watch multiple matches across different courts and experience the full Wimbledon atmosphere.
The best value days are the first four days of the tournament (Monday-Thursday of week one), when all the top players are in action across the outside courts. By the second week, most matches move to the show courts.
What to Wear
There's no strict dress code for spectators (that only applies to players and the Royal Box). However, Wimbledon is a smart-casual affair. Most people wear summer dresses, chinos, or smart shorts. Avoid football shirts or fancy dress — you'll feel out of place.
A light jacket or layers are essential. British summer weather is unpredictable, and even on warm days it can turn cool in the shade of the stands during evening matches.
What to Bring
Wimbledon allows you to bring your own food and drink, which is unusual for a major sporting event. Many regulars pack a picnic with a bottle of something nice to enjoy on Henman Hill. You can also bring an umbrella, sunscreen, and a portable phone charger.
Bags must be smaller than 40cm x 30cm x 30cm. Large rucksacks will be refused entry. Leave laptops at home.
Making the Most of Your Day
Arrive early — gates open at 10:30am and the grounds fill up quickly. Head straight to the outside courts first, where you can get remarkably close to the players. Courts 2 and 3 are fan favourites, with intimate settings and world-class tennis just metres away.
Don't skip the Wimbledon shop for souvenirs, and make sure to try the famous strawberries and cream from one of the many stalls around the grounds. A Pimm's from the bar is equally essential.
If you have a Centre Court or No. 1 Court ticket, you can leave and return throughout the day — so explore the grounds between matches.
