The Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari, Imola to you and me, is one of the more recent additions to the F1 calendar. But that wasn’t always the case. Located just outside the historic city of Bologna, Imola played host to both the San Marino & Italian Grands Prix from 1981 until 2006. Motorcycles raced here first in 1953, with Formula 1 following a decade later.
Imola is an integral part of F1 lore for a number of reasons. First, the wide variety of racing car manufacturers located nearby includes Minardi, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, and Dallara. Second, the tragic events that unfolded during the 1994 Grand Prix weekend.
Michael Schumacher is the most successful F1 driver around Imola with 7 wins, followed by Messrs Prost and Senna on 3 a piece. Brits Mansell and Hill both have a pair of Grand Prix wins at Imola.
